Arranging, co-directing, and rehearsing the music for this Bassoon Halloween Concert with Dr. Aaron Pergram was a very unique and fun learning experience and opportunity. In doing so I Gained the ability to arrange music from different mediums and media for a different context. As a composer up to this point, I’ve only been writing music of my own creation either for a set instrumentation for a group of people or instruments of my own choice. With this project, I had to write only for bassoon quartet or quintet and piano, an interesting limitation. I also was arranging music rather than composing something entirely new, meaning I was using finished works from different video games and arranging them in an entirely different context. In this case, I was turning these videogame tracks into a medley themed around different genres, such as indie game music and RPG music, for bassoon Quintet with piano. I also learned how to rehearse with people music that I have written or arranged.
I have worked with multiple ensembles at Miami University. I have played for the Miami University Wind Ensemble for 3 years under a scholarship as a bassoonist. I have also performed with the Miami University Laptop Ensemble. These have been great collaborative experiences that has greatly improved my connection with music both as a performer and composer.
